Bahau celebrates 22nd Annual Ratha Yatra
Written by Simheswara dasa

More than 300 devotees came from Bahau, Melaka, Seremban, Port Dickson and other centres to celebrate the 22nd Annual Ratha Yatra at Bahau.

ISKCON Bahau is the 3rd official branch of ISKCON Malaysia. ISKCON got introduced to Bahau during the time of the then ISKCON Vice President HG Ram Caran prabhu. Rama Caran prabhu preached to HG Kamala Kar prabhu who was then working in the Bahau Rubber state. Kamala Kara prabhu enthusiastically introduced many devotees to Rama Caran prabhu, distriubuted hundreds of Gita which a short time and Rama Caran prabhu almost immediately began a centre and within a short while initiated the Bahau Branch. Kamala Kara prabhu would take hundreds of Bhagavad Gitas and distribute them to the local devotees mostly of Oriyya origin. Gauranga Gopinatha prabhu, Paramananda Krishna prabhu and Sesa Sayi prabhu took the branch to greater heights and within a short time purchased two shophouses for the temple and branch.

The chairman of the branch HG Paramananda Krishna prabhu and Vice Chairman HG Sesa Sayi have have since then very successfully maintained the preaching operations. Paramananda Prabhu often equates the ISKCON Bahau branch to a factory producing devotees who would later migrate to bigger cities for want of better material prospects. Similar predicaments are faced by most non city ISKCON centres.

The Bahau temple and branch building serves as an example of a standard premise for a medium ISKCON centre. The branch has two double storey shophouses adjacent to one another. The first floors are separated for men and women accommodation. The temple room is spacious enough for worship and small festival celebrations. A practical and well organised kitchen is at the back of the Deity room while adjacent to the kitchen is a neat prasadam serving counter. All sections of the premise are well kept and organised. HG Paramananda Krishna prabhu who is government secondary school headmaster takes personal responsibility for the management operations of the centre.

The annual Ratha Yatra is also a sort of a get together especially for those who are working away from Bahau. Many Oriyya devotees from local housing areas are happy that their Ratha yatra Puri, Orissa is also celebrated in Bahau and so make it a point to attend every year.
